Apple's foldable iPhone will have some MAJOR design changes, fresh leak reveals

Daily Mail - Science & tech

We already know Apple is secretly preparing its first ever foldable iPhone. But now, keen tech fans have just got a new hint at what it may look like. According to a leak from a veteran Apple analyst, Mark Gurman of Bloomberg, the'iPhone Fold' will see some major design changes. And Mr Gurman claims that anyone who tries the new foldable device will'never want to go back'. Although it has been rumoured for years, it now looks almost certain that Apple is planning to unveil the folding iPhone in September 2026.

Apple's new security update will block thieves from accessing a stolen iPhone

Daily Mail - Science & tech

Apple is set to add even more protection to the iPhone in the next iOS update, which will stop thieves from accessing smartphones with passcodes. Called'Stolen Device Protection,' the new setting promises to prevent cyber-criminals from locking iPhone users out of their Apple accounts or accessing any of their passwords stored in Apple's Keychain. If the feature detects an unknown location of the iPhone, it will require Apple's FaceID to unlock the device. Stolen Device Protection is set to roll out with Apple's iOS 17.3 but is currently being tested in beta. Apple is rolling out a new feature to protect its customers' passcodes, online banking access, private iCloud photos and videos, and everything else that a stolen, unlocked iPhone leaves vulnerable.

Apple Just Killed the Password--for Real This Time

WIRED

Year after year, the most popular passwords leaked in data breaches are 123456, 123456789, and 12345--'qwerty' and'password' come close behind--and using these weak passwords leaves you vulnerable to all sorts of hacking. Weak and repeated passwords are one of the most significant risks to your online life. For years, we've been promised a more secure, password-free future, but it seems like 2022 will actually be the year that millions of people start to move away from passwords. At Apple's Worldwide Developer Conference yesterday, the company announced it will launch passwordless logins across Macs, iPhones, iPads, and Apple TVs around September of this year. Instead of using passwords, you will be able to log in to websites and apps using "Passkeys" with iOS 16 and macOS Ventura.

The iPhone SE 2 may be the iPhone 9 we really want

#artificialintelligence

There's a reason people have been eagerly awaiting the iPhone SE 2: to herald in a new era of the best iOS and iPhone functionality at a low cost. But folks also appreciated the original iPhone SE's home button, and with it, Touch ID. The upcoming'New Spring iPhone 2020' – presumed to be the iPhone SE 2 – will retain the home button, according to noted leaker Evan Blass, and we have little reason to doubt it. But would Apple let one of its brand-new handsets have a low-tech authentication method, given how much it's invested in facial recognition with Face ID? Absent Blass' intel and solid track record, we'd be skeptical. True, Apple still produces the home button-packing iPhone 8, but that handset debuted in 2017, and it's now sold as a budget model.

2020 iPhone might have Touch ID inside the screen

#artificialintelligence

If you've been holding off on getting a new iPhone because Touch ID is gone, you might only have to wait another year. According to Bloomberg, Apple is reportedly testing iPhone prototypes with a new version of its Touch ID fingerprint sensor that's embedded in the display instead of inside a physical home button. The new in-display Touch ID would let "a user scan their fingerprint on a large portion of the display, and it would work in tandem with the existing Face ID system." SEE ALSO: What to expect from Apple's'iPhone 11' event on Sept. 10 The report corroborates an investor note by TF International Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who said last month that Apple was planning to resurrect the fingerprint sensor for iPhones slated for 2021. Bloomberg's report, however, suggests Apple could be readying the new Touch ID for iPhones for 2020 -- a year earlier if testing is successful. Apple replaced Touch ID with Face ID on the iPhone X in 2017, and the latest iPhones -- the iPhone XS and iPhone XR -- don't have a fingerprint sensor, either.

WhatsApp confirms worrying security flaw that lets ANYONE bypass Face ID or Touch ID locking feature

Daily Mail - Science & tech

A worrying WhatsApp bug has compromised new privacy controls introduced by the app on iPhones this month. WhatsApp recently introduced new biometric security features that let users lock the app using Face ID or Touch ID. The feature is meant to keep nosy friends from scrolling through your messages when your phone is unlocked. But a Reddit user has discovered a security flaw where anyone can bypass Face ID or Touch ID authentication, even if it's turned on. A worrying WhatsApp bug has compromised new privacy controls introduced by the app on iPhones this month.

WhatsApp update lets you hide chats using Face ID and Touch ID

Engadget

Instagram and Messenger could soon follow WhatsApp in introducing encrypted messaging as part of Facebook's plan to unify its app empire. In the meantime, WhatsApp is adding an extra layer of privacy on iOS with support for Touch ID and Face ID. The update (version 2.19.20) allows users to lock their messages behind their iPhone's biometric authentication features. You can switch it on by heading in to settings, selecting Account, Privacy and "enable Lock Screen." You'll then be able to set a time limit immediately, after a minute, 15 minutes or 1 hour.

Apple's next low-cost iPads might skip Face ID

Engadget

If the redesigned iPad Pro gave you hope that Apple would deliver a similar overhaul for lower-cost iPads, you might want to temper your expectations. Code sleuther Steve Troughton-Smith has discovered that the iOS 12.2 beta references four new iPad configurations that don't include Face ID, suggesting they'll stick to Touch ID and thus a more conventional design. This isn't shocking when Apple is likely sticking to a lower price point, but it does suggest that it could be a while before the company's depth-sensing camera tech is truly affordable. That same code also references a new iPod touch -- no, Apple hasn't forgotten about its last pocketable media player. While there's no mention of exactly what's new, it wouldn't have either Face ID or Touch ID.

Review: Apple gives MacBook Air (most) of the love it's been lacking

USATODAY - Tech Top Stories

Apple unveiled a new Macbook Air today at an event in Brooklyn, N.Y. Think a major update to the MacBook Air was long overdue? The last time Apple bestowed this much attention on the notebook the company claims as its "most loved Mac," Barack Obama was in his first term in the White House. Sure, we've seen some specs bumps along the way, and my own lightweight MacBook Air – circa mid-2013 – has been a reliable workhorse. But the No. 1 feature fans of the Air have had on our wish lists for years is the kind of beautiful high-resolution Retina display that Apple previously reserved for the most expensive computers in its mobile lineup, notably the priciest MacBook Pros, but also the most recent MacBook.
